Developing a Sexual Health Consent Strategy for Refugees: A Qualitative Approach

We report the development of a strategy for obtaining truly voluntary and informed consent sexual reproductive health (SRH) research with Burma-born refugees settled in Australia. Using qualitative descriptive design, we interviewed 29 providers refugee services (PRS) including care professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives), bilingual supporting staff (interpreters, social workers, settlement community liaison officers) administrative (practice managers, reception staff) who provide primary to refugees. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, subjected thematic analysis. Four themes emerged: (a) unique values people, (b) unfamiliarity Western concepts research, (c) usefulness individual discussions potential participants, (d) need verification participation prior interview.
